<h1>Flash Free Week</h1>
	<strong>Last year</strong> there was a
	<a href="http://theregister.co.uk/2009/07/22/adobe_flash_attacks_go_wild/">major zero-day attack on Adobe Flash
Player</a> for which the only fix was to disable or uninstall Flash Player—FlashBlock, NoScript and AdBlock
<a href="http://isc.sans.edu/diary.html?storyid=6847">were no good under normal circumstances</a> because even
whitelisted sites had been hit. Because the only option to be secure was to disable or remove Flash Player for a
week until Adobe issued the fix, I <a href="/blog/flash-week">called for</a> people to do exactly that. Live one
	week without Flash.
The problem with Adobe Flash is not even the speed, security problems or the instability. It’s the outright
assumption that every one has Flash and everybody wants it. When was the last time you saw a Flash object that had
proper fall back content rather than “Install Flash”? There will never be a plugin monopoly in the mobile device
space. The iPhone and iPad will never get Flash. Therefore any developer anywhere using Flash <strong>must</strong>
provide <em>equivalent</em> content within the <code>&lt;object&gt;</code> tag if they have any common sense.
The only way this is going to change is to generate the demand for properly provided Flash fallbacks and that will
never happen for as long as <em>you</em> have Flash installed on your computer. All I’m asking for you to do is to
live just one week without Flash. When you do this you’ll begin to see the Internet in a different light. If the
websites you use don’t have proper fallbacks then you should contact them and ask them to provide
	<a href="/code/video_for_everybody">proper fallback</a>. Even <a href="http://www.youtube.com/html5">YouTube
	offers HTML5 video</a>.
	<br /><br />
	Here are the <a href="http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html">uninstallers</a>.
	<br /><br />
Flash Free Week runs from the 23rd of July to the 29th.<br />
Please spread the word. Use the <a href="http://twitter.com/search?q=%23flashfreeweek">#flashfreeweek</a> hashtag
	on Twitter.
